Packaging innovation for a changing food industry

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are pleased to feature Versatile Packaging as our Packaging & Containers Manufacturing Company of the Month.

Founded in 1998, Versatile Packaging has evolved from a small start-up in Co. Monaghan into one of Ireland’s leading suppliers of innovative food packaging solutions. Established by Michael O’Reilly and Richard Mulligan, the company was shaped by deep experience in food production and food science, with a clear focus from the outset on delivering practical, future-facing packaging solutions for a fast-changing industry.

Now headquartered in Silverstream Business Park, Co. Monaghan, with additional warehousing to support national distribution, Versatile Packaging services customers across Ireland and the UK. Its offering spans advanced packaging materials, machinery and technical support for sectors including ready meals and protein, covering everything from high-performance films and rigid containers to CPET trays and Modified Atmosphere Packaging systems. Bespoke design, engineering, installation and maintenance services further strengthen its end-to-end capability.

Occupying a unique position at the intersection of materials supply and automation, Versatile Packaging is the only food packaging supplier in Ireland to offer a complete, fully integrated solution while holding both BRC and ISO: 14001 accreditations. This, combined with the team’s strong food production background, allows the business to go beyond product supply, supporting customers with line optimisation, troubleshooting and tailored solutions for private-label and shelf-ready formats.

Sustainability remains central to the company’s competitive edge. Versatile Packaging is actively engaged in a major Research and Development initiative through the SFI Industry Fellowship Programme, collaborating with Irish universities on next-generation technologies, including antimicrobial coatings designed to enhance food safety and reduce waste. Alongside this, the company works closely with manufacturers and customers to reduce material usage, lower CO2 emissions and ensure all sustainable materials are rigorously tested, supported by Life Cycle Assessments and verified recycling streams.

Seamus Finn, Head of Operations at Versatile Packaging, highlighted a recent investment responding directly to customer needs, “The addition of a new perforator to the film production room allows for precise perforation of packaging films, improving breathability and control of air, gas and moisture exchange. Originally developed to enhance the quality and safety of school meals, the technology prevents ballooning, enables even cooking and improves overall product performance for the end consumer.”

The company has also recently expanded into egg packaging, responding to growing demand for durable, hygienic and sustainable transport solutions. Its Eggs Cargo System is designed for strength, easy stacking and long-term reuse, while remaining simple to clean and disinfect – a key consideration for modern food production environments.

Looking ahead, Versatile Packaging is focused on digital transformation, with the rollout of a new ERP system and ecommerce platforms for both Versatile Packaging and Silverstream Packaging. These developments will enhance operational efficiency, streamline distribution and support the company’s longer-term ambition to evolve from a traditional supplier into a strategic, technology-driven partner – helping customers navigate regulatory change and move confidently towards a more sustainable, zero-waste food supply chain.
