Food and Drink Matters is incredibly proud to present Love Kombucha as its selected Alternative Health Beverage Provider of the Month.
Known for its incredible health benefits and delicious taste, Kombucha is a tea based, organic beverage that is created by fermenting tea and sugar with the Kombucha culture. Drinking regularly can result in a whole host of benefits including improved gut health, lowering cholesterol, boosting immune system and even preventing grey hair!
Love Kombucha was founded by Melanie Millin in 2013. Having suffered terribly with IBS for many years, Melanie had heard of the many advantages of Kombucha and decided to give it a try. However, she struggled to get hold of the beverage in the UK so began to create her own. Just a few months later Melanie found her IBS had significantly improved and wanted to share this beneficial drink with other sufferers in the UK.
“There was a huge gap in the market for Kombucha, and if I didn’t fill it someone else would have!” commented Melanie. “I began by sharing my homemade Kombucha with friends and family, and today I own a microbrewery that can brew 10,000 litres of the beverage every month.
“Kombucha can be made with any type of tea, but we use green tea due its additional benefits and then we add flavour with organic fruit juices or herbs. The taste is something like a sour apple cider, sharp at first but soon something you start to will crave!”
Love Kombucha is available in 4 flavours, all of which have been chosen for their very own health benefits, to support the natural function of Kombucha itself. These include the bestselling Original, Ginger; which is well known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, Ginger & Lime with a little extra citrus kick that mixes perfectly with gin, and Blueberry which is naturally packed with free-radical fighting antioxidants.
It is available in around 7-800 retail outlets across the UK and has even been exported to Iceland, Austria, the Netherlands, France and Singapore. It can be found in farm shops, delis, independent retail outlets, and stores such as London’s Fortnum and Mason. A subscription is also available for those who require a regular supply of Love Kombucha where customers can receive orders automatically at a frequency of their choice with free delivery and extra discount to reward you for your loyalty.
The first recorded use of Kombucha comes from China in 221 BC during the Tsin Dynasty. It was known as ‘The Tea of Immortality’ and often referred to as the ‘Elixir of Life’, which is quite a claim. Adding it to diets can have a different impact on every person with many claiming improvements in sleep, mobility, digestion and many more.
Aside from its health benefits, Kombucha tastes great and has 75% less sugar than fruit juice. It’s naturally gluten and dairy free and also vegan, using only organic ingredients.
“I get over 5 or 6 letters a week telling me different reasons why people love Kombucha,” Melanie continued. “When I set up the company there was only 1 other Kombucha seller in the UK and now there are around 30, but they all look up to what we have achieved as a guideline for success.
“Our aim is to educate people on the advantages of Kombucha and continue to grow and expand. My book, ‘Love Kombucha – Make your own natural healthy drinks’ tells the story of Kombucha and explores the many recipes you can achieve with this healthy ingredient.”
