#DoorsOnFridges

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are pleased to feature DoubleCOOL as our Fridge Door Solutions Company of the Month.

Polyplastic BV pioneered formed acrylic technology in the 1960s, recognising early on the material’s advantages over glass, it is safer, lighter and offers superior transparency. Over the past six decades, its acrylic glazing solutions have become a trusted standard across motorhomes, caravans and marine applications. Building on this heritage, DoubleCOOL was established in 2014 with a clear objective: to bring energy-efficient refrigeration door solutions to the retail sector. Its lightweight, double-pane acrylic doors help retailers reduce energy consumption, cut operational costs and lower their carbon footprint.

Today, Polyplastic BV and DoubleCOOL operate under the ownership of Lippart, a European group with operations across the continent. Manufacturing is based in Rotterdam, supported by a UK headquarters and warehouse in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, enabling efficient nationwide service. Since launching in the UK in 2022, DoubleCOOL has seen rapid adoption, with tens of thousands of doors installed across hundreds of retail locations. Working with major supermarket chains, symbol groups, independent convenience stores and refrigeration partners, the company delivers practical, energy-saving solutions for chiller cabinets, driven by a simple mission: to put doors on fridges.

The range includes two main types of double-pane acrylic hinged doors designed to suit most multideck chiller cabinets. The Swing 1 range is the most widely adopted option for retrofitting open-fronted cabinets, particularly in the convenience sector, helping to significantly reduce energy consumption, lower electricity costs, cut carbon emissions and extend equipment lifespan. As part of a broader efficiency upgrade, DoubleCOOL can also enhance cabinet performance with LED lighting.

The Swing 2 range offers the same energy-saving benefits with a more contemporary aesthetic, featuring semi-integrated hinges and a choice of handles, including a bonded option that opens to 170 degrees and incorporates a 90-degree self-closing function for ease of use and replenishment. Suitable for both OEM installation and retrofit projects, it combines performance with sleek design. Both Swing 1 and Swing 2 offer a full cabinet solution for chiller and Roll-In Milk Doors.

DoubleCool has recently secured a second-term contract with a leading UK Supermarket as the sole supplier of both chiller and roll-in milk doors, further strengthening its position as a trusted long-term partner with the manufacturing capacity and supply resilience to meet the demands of new store openings and extensive refit programmes. Engineered for the heavy-duty requirements of large-format stores, DoubleCool doors combine robust yet lightweight construction with soft-close safety hinges and a range of options including screen printing, bumpers and floor-deflector systems.

Sharon Harrison, Managing Director of DoubleCOOL, highlights upcoming developments and recent progress, “We are preparing to launch a new sliding door solution designed specifically for smaller format stores and environments with narrow aisle widths, where traditional hinged doors are not always practical. The system maximises space, improves customer flow and supports efficient replenishment, while still delivering the durability, clarity and energy-saving performance that DoubleCOOL is known for. It will open up significant opportunities within convenience and compact supermarket formats.

“Alongside this, we have introduced a fully integrated door replacement service, which has been operationally transformative for our customers. One of the key industry challenges has been long lead times for replacement doors, often 12–16 weeks, leaving stores exposed both aesthetically and from an energy efficiency standpoint.

“To address this, we launched a service arm offering a 5-day SLA from job logging through to first-time fix. This ensures that any broken or missing doors are replaced quickly, maintaining store standards and, critically, protecting the energy savings that chiller doors deliver. This combination of product supply and rapid-response service is a key differentiator for DoubleCOOL and a model we are now looking to expand.”

From post offices and supermarkets to farm shops, garden centres, holiday park stores and universities, DoubleCOOL has built strong partnerships across a wide range of sectors, supporting buying, operational and sustainability functions. The company also works closely with major symbol groups and independent retailers. In addition, DoubleCOOL is an active member of the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), the Federation of Independent Retailers (the Fed) and the Farm Retail Association, and has recently exhibited at EuroShop and the National Convenience Show.

Please join DoubleCOOL in their mission to put doors on fridges. If you’re operating open chillers we’d urge you to get in touch and discover for yourself just how effective, affordable and simple DoubleCOOL’s acrylic door solution is.
